Over the years I have heard many times, there is nothing that I would want to volunteer for when I would tell fellow workers where I was the evening before. I don’t feel passionate about any group was another excuse often mentioned. While this may be true for a very few, most of those making this claim were in fact wrong. When I would talk to time for a bit I nearly always found that they had passions and many of those passions had opportunities for volunteering. Most of my fellow workers simply did not prioritize their passions as worth the effort more than they wanted to have fun chasing ladies or other activities.

The key is you need to see the effort as worth while. For several ideas on why you should volunteer from a medical point of view see the posts I have already written on this subject.

The key here is to not take a list of volunteer groups and wedge yourself into one of them. Find your passion and then find the associated group! Your passion is by far the most important thing you could identify first.

Outdoors oriented folks can choose from a number of groups. Izaak Walton League had in 2006 50,000 members and 300 clubs. How about the Audubon Society, Bass Unlimited or Pheasants Forever, are any of these up your alley? Perhaps the famous Boone and Crockett association fits you more? Pheasants Forever in 2006 had 570 chapter in 29 states. Don’t forget Future Farmers of America (FFA) or youth groups like 4H or Ruritan, which in 2006 had 30,000 members and 1,000 clubs.

For manufacturing members the American Society of Quality (ASQ) is active and has volunteer opportunities.

For history enthusiasts the opportunities abound. Currently the Civil War group, http://www.civilwar.org/aboutus/events/park-day/ is planning a volunteer day for April 6th, 2013. Check with the site for opportunities in your state. This group’s aim is to preserve civil war areas from land development. This is not an easy task and the efforts to preserve our history drive many a passionate volunteer.

The current climate in politics makes is likely most voters are more aware of the NRA than they may have been in the past. But there are several other less populated groups with similar political thoughts, including the Well Armed Woman FB site located here, http://www.facebook.com/TheWellArmedWoman. It is not only the men who believe that the 2nd amendment to the Constitution of the United States has value, many ladies do as well. Many people are stunned when they find this out. Way too many stereotypes abound on this subject.

Perhaps you like chess? There are local chess clubs all over the United States. The US Chess Federation website is http://www.uschess.org. You can locate other players online or locally. In 2006 the US had 1334 chess clubs. Keep in mind that face to face interactions along with passionate volunteering is what we are looking for here.

Other causes include Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD) with 600 chapters in 2006, Association for the Advancement of Retired People (AARP) with 35 million members in 2006, Investment clubs, United Investors Association which in 2006 had 100 groups, Clown Clubs, Motorcycle Clubs, National Garden Clubs with 217,233 members and 7,251 clubs in 2006.

The variety of groups should by now strike most readers as wide and varied. If you can feel passionate about it and find a local group then you are well on your way towards better health and better mental well being.

Before you say you can’t find a group, find your passion. This is often the really hard spot. What moves you?

Sports teams have many groups. Even if you move most areas have sports hang outs for fans. I have been a Green Bay Packer fan ever since watching the first two Super Bowls with my dad. Since Green Bay won, and my home state of Iowa has no professional sports team of any kind in the state, I adopted the Packers. Through ups and downs I tried to follow them. Today you can find local bars and groups of Packer Fans nearly anywhere you travel in the US and even some places abroad. This is true of other sports teams as well. While the volunteer opportunities are limited, if you are passionate then the possibilities are likely to come up.

My father was a private pilot in Central Iowa years ago. He joined and eventually served as the president of the Midwest Tri-Pacer Association. He planned meeting sites for the group to fly into and eat at different locations, making arrangements for the reception and meetings. He loved the group and the work of volunteering for a year seemed to him no problem. Sometimes as kids we went along too. Many private pilots are very passionate about their type of plane and their yearly meetings if they attend. One large meeting for private pilots is in Oshkosh, Wisconsin every year. They require a large number of volunteers for the week long event.

My point is that groups of all kinds abound. I used to do Western Square Dancing in Des Moines, Iowa. They always needed volunteers to coordinate the functions. Don’t forget magic clubs, Metal Detector clubs, Archaeological Clubs, Science Clubs, Dog Clubs, Cat Clubs, Car Clubs, clubs that help veterans such as the USO, retired US Navy ships clubs (particularly if they were made into diving reefs like my first ship, the USS Speigle Grove LSD-32), ships reunions, Army unit reunions, Daughters of the American Revolution which had 2,975 chapters in 2006, and many more.

Let’s get back to passionate. Did a close relative have a encounter with a terminal disease? That list and the associated groups are vast. My first wife died from Lupus, so the Lupus Foundation of America was a natural place for me to volunteer for a few years. Cancer groups are prolific. Many other groups help those with a special disease. Is your passion in this area?

Do your passions run towards religious groups. The amount of people associated with religious volunteer groups in the United States is very large. The Roman Catholic Church (RCC) group, Knights of Columbus, with 1.6 million members in 2006 is one of the better known of these volunteer groups. Started by Father Michael McGiveny in New Haven Connecticut in 1882, it was a reaction to the anti-Catholic sentiment in the United States as well as the success of the Freemasons, functioning as a place for Catholics to assemble just like their counterparts in Freemasonry.

As we will see, many civic and fraternal groups were either formed by Masons or highly influenced by the fraternity. Imitation is regarded as the most sincere form of flattery. This makes the Freemasons, the largest and oldest fraternal organization in the world, pretty respected if all of the groups it influenced can be a guide.

The Knights of Columbus often hold parades for St. Patrick’s Day. In many locations they invite the local Shriners to bring their unique subgroups along to increase the size and variety of the parade. Shriners, all members being Freemasons before being admitted to the Shrine if they petition for membership, are very willing to share a parade in most cases. I have as a Shriner participated in such a gathering when I was in Va. Beach, Va. The fun and social connections between many who often don’t gather socially is something to see. I have very fond memories of these parades and the socializing after wards.

To be clear in this instance, Knights of Columbus (KOC) members are required to be Roman Catholic Church (RCC) members in good standing. So Greek Orthodox Church members, also Catholic but not Roman would usually not qualify. Freemasons have no issue with Roman Catholics joining in any way since they believe in God, but not all Freemasons can join the KOC if they are Jewish, Deist, or Protestant in their religious leanings.

Groups to be passionate about would seem abundant. Book clubs, computer clubs, political groups, ethnic associations of all kinds, weight losing clubs, dart groups, pool playing groups, card playing groups such as Bridge clubs, adult soft ball groups, the list seems endless.

Please don’t take away from my suggestions that only Jews and Christians can be Freemasons. Freemasonry is a world wide group with lodges and members in most countries of the world. A famous British writer, Rudyard Kipling wrote many books which eventually became classics and some were turned into movies, such as The Man Who Would Be King. He wrote in his biography how he was involved with men of several religions in his Masonic travels.

Rudyard Kipling, Freemason and author

From his autobiography published posthumously in 1937, Something of Myself–

“In ’85 I was made a Freemason by dispensation (Lodge Hope and Perseverance 782 E.C.), being under age, because the Lodge hoped for a good Secretary. They did not get him, but I helped, and got Father to advise in decorating the bare walls of the Masonic Hall with hangings after the prescription of Solomon’s Temple. Here I met Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, members of the Arya and Brahmo Samaj, and a Jew tyler, who was priest and butcher to his little community in the city. So yet another world opened to me which I needed.”

Kipling’s own entry suggests that at this time British military officers in India were open and even well associated with men from various religious backgrounds. Since Freemasonry started in England, it seems safe to say that this fraternity appeals to good men of various religious values. The ideal group to bring men together rather than keep them apart. Very few groups do this particular social aspect as well as the Masons. You will find passion runs deep in many Freemasons!

Once you figure out a passionate issue you would be willing to support, the chances that you can align with some group are pretty good. In future posts I will delve into this matter in greater detail.

Freemasons, the oldest and largest fraternal organization in the world has a long history.

This group of like minded men have been around so long that way too many stories embellished with questionable circumstances have been circulated. From some of these imaginations we get the movie, National Treasure. So many books, both pro and con have been written about Freemasons that I can’t even think of covering all of the material here in one post. I will try and condense the material into a useful amount so that the reader can at least decide if they have an interest in becoming a member or becoming an empowered volunteer for one of the many groups associated with Freemasonry.

First off, Freemasonry is a fraternal organization.

It is different from civic groups like the Lions Club or the Kiwanis or Rotary International. The difference is more legal than anything. Fraternal groups can have closed memberships requiring votes for entry. Civic groups are much more open, with restrictions being limited to well defined sectors such as the Rotary and the business sectors represented for each section within the local club. Civic groups can’t legally exclude any sectors of the public for instance. There have been a few court cases that have settled this in the past.

Freemasons started in the current incarnation we see today in the year 1717 in England. The past beyond that for the group traditionally included the masons building the great Roman Catholic Churches and buildings going back several hundred years. Some claim masons go back to the times of the Crusades even. However, today’s groups can only trace their current form to the creation of Freemasons in 1717. Before that, so many things were different that the linage is very hard to prove and for our purposes we really don’t care.

Freemasons in the United States are open about their membership and members often openly wear the affiliated symbols openly and proudly. However, Masons are one of the most persecuted of groups in modern times. Freemasons were not welcome under dictatorships or in Germany under the Nazi party. It is a little known fact that masons were included in the rounded up groups sent to the concentration camps.

Jews, gypsies, gays, and masons were all included in the concentration camp round up in Germany prior to and during WWII.

Masons, fearing the hostile government of Germany took to wearing a small lapel pin of a forget me not, a purple flower to distinguish themselves to others in the groups, much like the fish symbol was used by Christians during the time after Jesus in Rome.

Freemasonry today is a wide branch of a tree containing many different sections of groups, all with a Masonic connection. Think of this collections of groups like a high school in the United States. For a member of the school to join associated groups is normal. But you can’t join the base ball group of another school if you don’t live there. You have to stay in your area. It is the same with Freemasons. Once you have petitioned and been fully initiated into the local lodge as a Master Mason, which is also called the third degree of Masonry, you are at the top of the ladder. You can go no higher, only adding other groups.

Like a high school has many clubs and groups, so does the Master Mason confront many potential groups who will happily put him to work for the cause they support. You can’t just skip to the supporting group and skip the process of becoming a mason though, just as you can’t attend a school group without belonging to that school, home schooled children exempted.

Order of the Eastern Star

Once you have joined the local Freemason’s lodge your are usually allowed to consider the other groups as you see fit. Such groups as the Shriners, Tall Cedars of Lebanon, the Order of the Eastern Star are all for adults. The Order of DeMolay is a boys youth group. Rainbow Girls is a youth group for girls. There are other groups associated with masons.

Eastern Star is for ladies as well as men, all the lady has to show is a relationship to a mason.

Shriners

The purpose of Freemasonry in today’s society is stated as, “To make good men better”. This is simple and yet very complicated. The voting process for membership entry is supposed to ensure that only men of high character are allowed to join. There is a group that meets with you and your spouse to ensure she will not be unhappy if you join. Masons promote harmony both in the lodge by banning any conversation regarding religion or politics, but also at home by ensuring that spouses are secure that their men are attending functions which reflect positively on their reputations and that of their respective families.

If you do a search engine request on Freemasonry you will get many replies. Some of them will not be positive. Some will claim that Freemasons are a “secrete” organization which is unChristian. This is simply false. I am a Freemason, I have been in the group in many different states for over 20 years now. I have been in several of the associated groups as well. We do not have any deep dark secretes like the movies show, nor do we do sinister things during our initiations. Lastly, we are completely compatible with most Christian and many other religions.

I will put it this way, the group that has issues with Freemasonry must base their objections on either false or misleading information in order to compromise Christian values as they view them in some way.

Religions for the most part are happily aligned with the tenants of Freemasonry, since most of the initiation wording comes straight from the Old Testament part of the Bible, specifically the part involving King Solomon in first and second Kings. The idea is to use the symbols from this story as a pattern for building one’s moral character. Very simple, easily remembered rules from Bible stories help teach the new Mason his requirements and expectations.

Freemasons use rules and symbols that are put into a kind of story surrounding the building of Kind Solomon’s temple as an allegory for every mason to build his own personal spiritual temple here on earth. In other words, take the many lessons from the Bible verses that are memorized and make yourself a better person.

Freemasons don’t preach salvation, we only claim that we live on after we die here on earth.

How that is done and the surrounding issues are left to the individual and his church if he attends one. In America, most Freemasons attend a church of their choice. Many attend on a regular basis. However Jews are also welcome along with many from the other major religions of the world.

The key is to believe in a Supreme Being, usually called God.

Many famous people were Freemasons. Here is a site which lists some of them. http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/famous-freemasons.html

Some famous Masons are remembered for behavior which was not very Masonic, meaning not of good character. Likely the most memorable of these was Benedict Arnold, famous for betraying his Commander General George Washington during the Revolutionary War.

Other memorable divisions between Masonic Brothers in American history involved Davy Crockett in his opposition to the Native American policies of President Andrew Jackson and the Korean War division between General Douglas MacArthur and then President Truman firing his general for insubordination.

These high profile episodes reflect and refute the notion that Masons will not enforce laws between themselves. Davy Crockett was so distraught with his treatment by his Brother Mason that he left his home and went to Texas to fight in their revolution, with several Brother Masons also involved and where he seemed to find better treatment as well.

The public perception that Masons will refuse to deal with fellow members as needed when in public office should now be dead from these examples.

The internet is full of stupid sites making so called historical claims that Freemasons do many creative and lowly things. I can tell you from personal experience they are simply not true. There are only a very few things which Freemasonry members promise not to reveal to the public. To that end, in 1723 a book was published which claimed to give out all of the secretes of the fraternity. To this day none of the so called secretes have been changed due to that violation of the authors oath when he published them.

It simply doesn’t matter if someone learns the hand grip or the gesture or whatever. To be a Mason starts in the heart with the right attitude and goes from there. It is not in gestures or hand shakes. So the liars on the internet can continue their negative crusade, but it will not stop good men from continuing their good works on behalf of society and in the name of the Holy Saint’s John.

To be a Mason you need to believe in a Supreme Being, usually called God. This allows the three religions stemming from Abraham of the Bible, including Jewish followers of most variations, Christian followers in most instances, and the followers of Mohammad as well as a few of the other religions of the world that are in alignment with the idea of a supreme being can apply to join Freemasonry.

Many famous Masons, such as Ben Franklin were Deists during the age of enlightenment, meaning that they were not Christian any longer, even if they were raised that way. George Washington was another Deist. Deists were not Christian, rather they believed God was a kind of watchmaker who wound up the universe and then stepped aside to let matters unwind. Since Deists believe in a Supreme Being or God, they too are welcome to join the ranks of Freemasonry. This is mentioned to set the example that very good men such as these were also Freemasons and history has not judged them harshly for either characteristic.

Atheists are not welcome to join Freemasonry.

If you take a look at some of the more famous Freemasons, you should be able to detect the true nature of the group as judged by the overall tone and character of the past members. Many of the more famous members were famous not for being masons but for their contributions to society. I will let you review the list for yourself and come to your own conclusions.

In the future I will write about many of the other Freemason groups and their respective traits.

For now, Freemasonry is a worthy group for the consideration of the empowered volunteer. It has a vast amount of space to enjoy and explore. Enjoy this group if you choose to spend your time in such good company. So mote it be!

Michael Marmot, in his book “The Status Syndrome, How Social Standing Affects Our Health and Longevity” makes the case through massive data gleaned from many sources over 30 years that health can be determined by social status, with the level of integration of a society as a predictor of the health of that society.

This idea was first predicted by pioneering Sociologist Durkheim and while now called Social Capital many studies find the connection valid as a predictor of social health as well as potential aid for the individual participant to learn from and apply for their own lives.

In other words, the better connected a society is the better the level of trust and the better the health of the society as a whole would be expected. This does not always mean the rich are expected to have better health on the macro level or whole society level. Many other things enter into this line of thinking. How close an individual is to others in society for instance plays a huge role in their life expectancy.

Life expectancy can also be extended as a society during wars as demonstrated by Amartya Sen who found that in Britain during the war years an increase in life expectancy existed and was thought to be from the positive effects on societies’ social integration which directly reflected mortality rates. War brought folks together in a way that focused their efforts and their common cause, resulting in longer life for society as a whole despite the deaths from the war.

Durkheim, a father of Sociology studied social integration from religious, domestic, and political points of view with regards to suicide rates. His findings supported his conclusions that the more integrated a society was the less the rate of suicide would be. Specifically in 19th century Europe he found that Protestant countries in Europe were often found to have higher rates of suicide than countries where the population was mostly Catholic.

In general the rates of suicide were even lower for Jewish populations. His conclusions from these studies were that the strong and unified society for the Jewish population and also for the Catholic population supported people and resulted in lower suicide rates than the Protestant populations where a more individualist approach to life was observed.

Please note this does not endorse one religion over another, it cites how populations in specific countries implemented their respective religions and how that part of their lives impacted their health.

Durkheim went on to study the effects of marriage on populations and the effects of war on total population suicide rates as well. He concluded that social integration was one of the biggest factors in not only the health of a population but in the individuals as well. Now called social capital and studied for the last 30 years or so before Marmot’s book in 2004, social integration can be applied by the individual confidently for both status raising health impact as well as strategies for health improvement through social connections.

The bottom line is that individuals can do things to increase their social status. They can do things to increase their social capital.

They can also significantly raise their health expectations by positively driving these aspects of their lives!

If you take the proper actions, you can improve your chances of not only extending your life but having a better quality of life. Many people would expect that the rich would as a society outlive the poorer societies. Money is not the single best predictor of longer life however when it comes to societies.

Ichiro Kawaichi from Harvard University was a researcher who took on this question on the relationship between the differences in social capital and the good or low health expectations. His team used surveys to quantify the level of trust in groups and then looked for the expected results of health levels. Societies that can be viewed as high in social cohesion like Japan who is rich, Kerala which is poor, or in the middle like Costa Rica have better health than others with equal wealth but less social cohesion, concludes Marmot in his book, The Status Syndrome. So the amount of money of a society is less a predictor of health than many people would think.

Another aspect to health is the impact on individuals who have low control over their lives, or at least a perception of that low control.

Marmot writes, “Furthermore, the greater the degree of inequality of material deprivation and of income, the worse the health”. Low control was the link in this issue between health and living poor. Generally speaking, the poor view their lives as having less control and the well-off view their lives as having more control over their individual decisions.

This concept of health and income inequality with regards to an aging population is something we in the United States will confront in greater degrees in our future as our economies seem to be driving a greater economic wedge between the poor and the rich. Can government policy changes help overcome the health disparities predicted or perhaps resulting from the poor who have low control over their lives and yet will be entering the government health care system at greater rates in the next few years?

This post is right now concerned with the individual and how that member of society can positively impact their potential future health by making changes in their lives. These changes need to be cost effective and also not barred by social status. They need to be within the reach of the normal American. I believe the studies cited in this post reflect that potential for the normal American to positively impact their lives. These studies and many others show an individual’s health impact positively improving by increasing social connections. This is one reason for someone to join a group!

The empowered volunteer’s mission is to help people understand the benefits of joining their respective group.

In short, the stage is set for the Empowered Volunteer to take charge of their lives and reap the potential impact on their health and mental wellbeing while helping others find their way towards these same benefits. This is truly a win-win situation.
